What's Happening?
May 9, 2008
- Teacher Appreciation Week Thanks for planting Seeds of Success, SVFT teachers touch minds, shape futures!
- Wright Tech- Our understanding following the State Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, May 7, is that Commissioner of Education Mark McQuillan has called for a task force to be convened to study the plan. Legislative action will not be needed to begin this process and SVFT will be represented on this panel. While at the Board meeting, Rick and Pat stressed that a press release or Administrative letter should be sent document the System’s commitment to a partnership with Norwalk Community College and the intention to develop a middle college at Wright Tech.
- General Membership Meeting- Will be held on Thursday, May 15 at 6:30 P.M. at Wilcox Tech. Refreshments will be served. Please come.
- School Visits - Have continued this week with a visit to Kaynor on Monday. Kaynor staff enjoyed a bountiful buffet in celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week, thanks to the efforts of Linda DeSousa, who chairs the staff club. Building representatives are being asked to schedule a union meeting on the day of the visit. The SVFT officers will arrive in each building on or close to 1:00 p.m. and visit with teachers who may be free and have individual issues to discuss. At the close of school the officers will attend a union meeting in each school. Some schools have had to cancel due to scheduling conflicts within the buildings. Those meetings will be rescheduled for June.
- Scholarship Applications Available -The applications for the nine (9) students and the teacher grant(s) are available on the SVFT web site. Deadline for completed applications is May 15, 2008. The Scholarship Committee is scheduled to meet on May 20 to review all applications and select the winners.
- Political Action Committee- Many legislative changes have impacted the process for P.A.C. donations. Teri Merisotis, AFT Legislative Liaison, will be working with our political action committee to implement the changes and begin the process for the fall, 2008 election. The committee is scheduled to meet on May 8 at 4:00 at the SVFT office.
- THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY SIX WEEKS OF SCHOOL LEFT – THE YEAR IS FLYING BY. MAKE THOSE LAST WEEKS ENJOYABLE FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR STUDENTS!
