  • Special Election- The SVFT membership elected Edward Leavy, Jr. Executive Union Representative November 12 to replace Ed Lang whose resignation was effective 11/12/08. The Executive Committee and the Executive Council will now have to approve a special election to elect a new treasurer. The treasurer’s position will be vacant due to Ed Leavy’s election as Executive Union Representative. Once the council approves the special election, the timelines will be published and a nomination period will be opened. It is expected that a special treasurer’s election will take place in February.
  • Help us udate our database - Many members – over 70 – do not have their correct mailing addresses on file at the SVFT office. This means they do not receive any information sent via U.S. mail. So far this year we have mailed (as mandated by the Constitution & By-Laws) letters with information about the special election and post cards with the candidates names. Information about the next election will be undeliverable without the proper addresses. INFORMATION ABOUT IMPENDING BUDGET CUTS WILL ALSO BE UNDELIVERABLE. We need your e-mail addresses as well. Don’t miss important information – give your current mailing addresses to your building reps. or to Irene Sheades at the SVFT office.
  • Retirement Information - Many members have called the office with questions about retirement. We have limited information to share and cannot estimate for you what your benefits might be. The number for State of CT retirement information is 860-702-3490. Or you can visit their web site. Click here
  • Teacher Certification- The State Department of Education is examining certification regulations for Connecticut’s teachers. The AFT placed an article on its website with information about the proposals and a web form where teachers can comment on the certification regulations. Click here for the AFT web site.
  • Anomaly Pay- Members receiving this payment should expect to see it in the November 20 paycheck. If you have questions call the SVFT office.
  • Degree Scale Stipend- According to Central Office the degree scale stipends will be in the paycheck dated December 19, 2008. Please comply with the posted application regulations if you feel you are eligible for a stipend.
  • State Board of Ed News- The CT Sub-Board met on 10/27 at Central Office. Vice President Pat Keavney stressed the importance of developing an action plan with timelines and goals for the transition of Wright Tech. This has been followed up by a letter, a copy of which was included in the reps. packets on 11/12. On Wednesday 11/5 the full Ct. Board of Education met in Hartford. Pat attended. Budget deficits and cuts dominated the meeting. The Governor wants $4 million in cuts from the CTHSS. The preliminary discussion included cuts in Adult Education and the preservation of the 9-12 grade programs.
