What's Happening?
    December 18, 2007

  • Labor-Management- The second meeting of the year took place Friday, 12/14 at the SVFT office in Rocky Hill. Representing management was: Superintendent Hughes, Assistant Superintendents Lugo and Lombardi, Principal Rich Cavallaro from Wilcox Tech and Jon Waleski, Consultant for Electronics. Representing labor was: SVFT officers Rick Tanasi, Pat Keavney, Ed Lang and Ed Leavy. Linda DeSousa, SVFT secretary was also there and taking notes of the meeting. Dan Thibault, Auto Body and Collision Repair Department Head from Oliver Wolcott and JeanAnn Buck, English teacher from Kaynor were also there. The room was filled to capacity. Much was discussed, watch for a detailed description in the January Newsletter. In summary we covered,
DWTA survey results (overwhelmingly opposed to the current process)
    Issues at Prince
December enrollment and comparison to 10/1 data we've lost 83 students since 10/1 the majority of whom are 11th graders.
    Wright Tech recruitment efforts
    Low enrollment and one-person shops.
Dr. Hughes shared the draft of the scheduling mandates for 2008-2009 as well as the proposed changes to the number of days in each exploratory phase. This topic generated many question especially from Dan Thibault, who has first hand experience with exploratory programs.
  • Outreach - A meeting with Representative Andrew Fleishman was scheduled for Thursday, December 13, but canceled due to the weather. Rick and Pat had planned to discuss the status of the teachers holding the 091 certification. This important meeting will be rescheduled next week.
  • DWTA SURVEY -This was a remarkable effort on the part of Will Arpaia, our Communications Coordinator. We had approximately 50% participation in this first endeavor. It was a very effective and impressive tool for us at Labor Management. It produced the data needed to get your opinions heard and we are confident that this information did not fall on deaf ears and changes in the DWTA will be forthcoming. THANK YOU to all the teachers who took the time to respond. View Survey results.

The SVFT leadership is well aware of how busy and stressed you all are and we are working hard to alleviate that burden in all possible ways. Our hope is that the Holiday break will provide you with the time to relax and unwind and get revitalized. We also hope that 2008 will bring abundant blessings to all of you.
