In the most basic terms employee mediation is “a process in which two or more people involved in a dispute come together to try and find a fair and workable solution to their problem.”

What can be mediated? Any work-realted and/or personal issues that are interfering with your job. Conflicts that may involve faculty, adminstrators and/or school personnel.

What's required of me? Your willingness to participate.

Where does mediation take place? At a private location mutaully agreed upon.

When is it scheduled? At a mutually convenient time.

How long does it take? One or two sessions.

Who will know about it? Parties in conflict and mediators facilitating the process. All are bound to confidentiality.

Who are the mediators? Peers, building reps, administrators, union officers, and human resource staff members who are certified mediators.

What is the role of the mediators? Bring parties together to solve their problems themselves. Mediators do not judge, take sides or impose solutions.

What happens if mediation doesn't work? Parties may seek resolution at a different level, e.g., filing a union grievance or a complaint to the school's principal or human resources.

Has it worked? Yes, it does work. If both parties are willing to work on the problem, at a minimum it makes a difficult situation tolerable and at best, creates a positive work environment.
